Presidential Service Learning Award

The Presidential Service Learning Award is designed to honor an outstanding campus group or organization in their achievements in the area of service learning. Service learning is defined as an instructional model that allows students to engage with the community; reflect on their experiences, making connections between those experiences and course materials as well as the academic discipline; and enter into public dialogue through writing, research, or other course activity. 

All JSU groups and organizations are eligible.  Groups/ organizations include but are not limited to student organizations, clubs, departments or a specific class for a designated semester.  Submissions may be made by the organization/ group, students, faculty or staff member.  A sub-committee of the University Service Committee will evaluate submissions and determine the winner. 

Criteria for Award:

  1. Demonstrate execution of service learning including both an academic and service component by the group.
  2. Service learning project must include campus or community engagement.
  3. Evidence of learning and application of lessons taught are established.
  4. Service learning project provided opportunity for students to use academic skills taught along with a practical and creative application by means of a service project.

Submissions must include:

  1. Briefly summaries the service learning activity.
  2. Supporting documentation including confirmation of academic and service component completed by the group.
  3. Letters providing testimonies of those involved in the service learning project.
  4. Attend the Service Learning/Community Service Showcase:
    1. Prepare a visual display, presentation, or poster detailing the service learning event/project. Select the type of display that you will bring: poster, power point, video. Select the type of display that you will bring: poster, power point, video. Please indicate if you will need any equipment:  easels or overhead projectors. If you have a video or power point, please submit a copy to be streamed over a big screen television to the audience.
    2. Be prepared to answer questions and briefly explain the service learning event/project to attendees at the showcase.

Dates:

Projects that have been completed between March 1 and February 28 are eligible. Deadline for applications is March 11 or the first weekday following.
